Rededicate 250
May 17, 1776 – May 17, 2026
On May 17, 1776, the Second Continental Congress declared a National Day of Humiliation, Fasting, and Prayers, encouraging the 13 colonies to unite in repentance and prayer to seek God’s help in the struggle for independence from Great Britain.
Congress officially declared this day to “confess and bewail our manifold sins and transgressions” to gain “pardon and forgiveness” in the midst of this escalating war.
The 13 colonies were on the brink of declaring independence (which occurred in July), and the move served to unite the colonies spiritually before formal political separation.
This day marked a critical moment of national reflection and unity in the spiritual landscape of the American Revolution.
It was a widespread event, with John Adams noting his high observance in a letter that same day that he penned to his wife, Abigail.
He reflected on the profound, positive reaction of the people to this religious day, noting that it was more widely followed than a regular Sunday church service.
Citizens were urged to refrain from “servile labor” and gather in their churches.
The goal of fasting was to ask for divine support to “frustrate the cruel purposes of our unnatural enemies” (Britain).
On May 17th, 2026, President Donald J. Trump is hosting a major “Rededicate 250” National Jubilee of Prayer, Praise & Thanksgiving event on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. This event is part of the 250th anniversary celebrations of the United States.
The main purpose of this event aims to “pray, give thanks, and rededicate America as one nation under God.” This unique gathering is meant to reflect on our nation’s faith history, echoing traditions from 1776.
We must return to our spiritual roots and this national event on May 17th, 2026, is a good start. Thank you, President Trump for recognizing the importance of this day in America’s history.
If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
2nd Chronicles 7:14
